Emergent trophic interactions following the Chinook salmon invasion of Patagonia

چکیده
In their native range, Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) have strong interactions with a multitude of species due to the annual pulse marine-derived nutrients that they deliver streams and forests when spawn die. Over past few decades, Chinook tshawytscha) has established non-native populations throughout Patagonia region southern South America. Here, we provide first assessment pathways through which salmon-derived enter stream forest food webs in by surveying multiple Chile identify invertebrate vertebrate consumers carcasses summarizing all documented trophic Patagonia. Blowflies (Calliphoridae) were dominant colonizer riparian zone, midge flies (Chironomidae) most common on submerged carcasses. Camera trap monitoring zone revealed consumption or carcass-associated invertebrates insectivorous passerine bird “chucao” (Scelorchilis rubecula), small rodents (black rat Rattus rattus, house mouse Mus musculus, and/or colilargo Oligoryzomys longicaudatus), American fox “culpeo” (Lycalopex culpaeus), invasive mink (Neovison vison). A was filmed transferring carcass from streambank, indicating scavenging likely increases degree terrestrial webs. The taxa consume are closely related benefit North America, suggesting nutrient incorporation functionally re-emerged Similarly, trout mykiss Salmo trutta) Patagonia, eco-evolutionary history coexistence could mean preadapted for thus be key beneficiaries this invasion. Expanded abundance impacts will vital understanding how these novel inputs alter Patagonian

A Genetic Test of Sexual Size Dimorphism in Pre-Emergent Chinook Salmon
Sex differences in early development may play an important role in the expression of sexual size dimorphism at the adult stage. To test whether sexual size dimorphism is present in pre-emergent chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), alevins were reared at two temperatures (10 °C and 15 °C) and sexed using the OtY1 marker on the Y-chromosome. Linear mixed models were used to test for sex dif...
متن کاملAre salmon-derived nutrients being incorporated in food webs of invaded streams? Evidence from southern Chile
Using stable isotope analyses of N and C we present preliminary evidence of marine-derived nutrients from introduced Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha Walbaum) in stream food webs of Laguna Los Patos, NW Patagonia. Similar to values reported within Chinook salmon's native distributional range periphyton and aquatic insects are the trophic levels that show the greatest enrichment of δ15N ...
متن کاملPathological and immunological responses associated with differential survival of Chinook salmon following Renibacterium salmoninarum challenge.
Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha are highly susceptible to Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD). Previously we demonstrated that introduced Chinook salmon from Lake Michigan, Wisconsin (WI), USA, have higher survival following R. salmoninarum challenge relative to the progenitor stock from Green River, Washington, USA. In the present study, we...
متن کاملLack of Protection following Re-Exposure of Chinook Salmon to Ceratonova shasta (Myxozoa).
The recent identification of multiple genotypes of the salmonid parasite Ceratonova shasta with different virulence levels in Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha suggests that it is possible to immunize fish against subsequent infection and disease. We hypothesized that exposure of Chinook Salmon to the less-virulent parasite genotype (II) prior to the more virulent parasite genotype (I) wo...
متن کاملCardiovascular changes and catecholamine release following anaesthesia in Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and snapper (Pagrus auratus).
We investigated recovery from anaesthesia in Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) with and without surgery. Fish either underwent light sedation on exposure to 60 ppm AQUI-S or surgical depth anaesthesia with 120 ppm AQUI-S. Surgical depth anaesthesia experiments were replicated using New Zealand snapper (Pagrus auratus). During light sedation, there was no evidence of catecholamine releas...
